Breaking the Chains : Reclaiming Self-Sovereignty
There were three armed policemen in my office as I entered the reception area. It took me a while to gather myself not knowing what’s going on…
My client and her husband were senior bureaucrats in the Indian Police Services. She was already sitting inside my chamber when I entered. She asked me to check her out on the Internet- all the awards she was given by the UN for her work with underprivileged women.
She said her major concern was that her daughter was of marriageable age and was keen to have a lavish wedding for her.
However the SC spoke with unmistakable clarity: “Get out of that marriage now! Your contract is over with this man you call your husband. Don’t stay there and humiliate your soul. You deserve better. Be honest and truthful to yourself. No one else is watching you – it’s your soul that is watching and hurting.
She was always ridiculed by her husband who felt threatened by her light and he made sure that she was embarrassed in front of their colleagues and at home.
L: Why did she bring three armed policemen to accompany her for a Qhht session?
SC: The police men in the office were a reflection of her not feeling safe in her own world. She is trying hard to keep the marriage together. You see it has served its purpose. By staying there she is putting herself in a jeopardy.
She cannot fulfil her mission if she continues in this toxic relationship. Much needs to be done by her on woman’s safety. But she can’t do anything if she doesn’t feel safe in her own world. She works hard so that she can be away from home and not be insulted in front of the children. “Get out” the SC screamed, “there’s not much time left!”
——
As she left my office that day, the armed policemen no longer felt like a symbol of fear. They were a reminder that sometimes, we must protect ourselves not from the outside world, but from the world we have allowed ourselves to live in.
The woman who had once been weighed down by her circumstances now walked with a renewed sense of purpose, ready to reclaim her life, ready to break free from the chains of a past that no longer served her.
Though the journey ahead would be hard, but one thing for certain: her true mission had only just begun.
